The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved a new prescription drug to treat a rare but serious condition known as COVID-19.
In a letter to doctors and patients, the agency said it was “committed to ensuring that physicians and patients can use the new prescription drug to prevent a potentially life-threatening condition”.
The prescription drug, Celebrex, treats pain and is used to treat arthritis and other types of pain.
The drug is sold under the brand name Celecoxib, which is available in generic at prices lower than a dollar a pill.
The drug, approved by the FDA on Friday, has a similar mechanism of action to the over-the-counter Celebrex, which is sold as an over-the-counter drug in Canada.
